CHILD ABUSE REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

CONTACTING THE COUNCIL
The Boy Scouts of America requires immediate notification of the council Scout Executive or his designee whenever information about possible child abuse in the Scouting program is uncovered.  In the California Inland Empire Council, you must call the Council Office in Redlands at 909-793-2463 or 877-732-1450. During business hours, connect directly to the Scout Executive (extension 120). After regular business hours, leave a message with your name, a description of the situation, and your contact phone numbers.

The Scout executive or his designee will ensure that all state reporting requirements have been met and will also take measures to protect the youth in the Scouting movement.

REPORTING CHILD ABUSE IN RIVERSIDE AND SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES
Reports of child abuse and neglect can be made to the local Child Protective Services office. In San Bernardino County, call Child Protective Services at 800-827-8724 or 909-384-9233. In Riverside County, call Children?s Services Division at 800-442-4918.

These departments accept all allegations of child abuse and neglect by telephone and in person from all sources, including identified sources, news media, anonymous sources, sources that have incomplete information, and referrals from the child or parent themselves.

Upon receiving a report of child abuse or neglect, a caseworker is to investigate the allegations and take such action as is necessary to ensure the safety of the child.

IMMUNITY FROM CIVIL OR CRIMINAL LIABILITY
Any person who, pursuant to the law, reports abuse and neglect or testifies in a child abuse hearing resulting from such a report is immune from any criminal or civil liability as a result of such action.

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
Except in Council-operated Day Camps and Resident Camps, most volunteer Scouting leaders are not considered to be mandated reporters, except if your occupation (teacher, medical professional, day care operator, etc.) requires such reporting. By reporting suspected abuse to the Scout Executive, he can ensure that state requirements have been met and proper measures have been taken to protect the youth members.
